NSW Positive Rugby Foundation 2019 Junior Regionals Draw released

Published
Friday, July 5, 2019

Following on from the Positive Rugby Foundation 2019 NSW Juniors State Championships, a number of junior representative teams were selected across the Under 14, Under 15 & Under 16 age groups across the Metropolitan districts to become the first step in the Representative pathway to a Sydney team.

NSW Country have also done the same with the bulk of their selections being made at their NSW Country Championships back in May.

These teams will compete at the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation 2019 Junior Regionals which will be played at Grantham Reserve, Seven Hills (was Boronia Park, Hunters Hill) on the 6th and 7th of July. This is a pure selection tournament where teams will compete for spots in the Sydney and NSW Country teams in the various age groups. Sydney selectors and NSW GEN BLUE talent scouts will be on site all weekend. The draw is below

There should be some fantastic rugby on show - in fact i think this is one of the best tournaments that we run in that regard... All these teams are named in the "Rep Squads" section of our website.

In the Under 14 age group the Sydney squad of roughly 40 players will be split into two teams Red and Blue - these teams will face off against each other on the Saturday for spots in the Sydney U14s. The following day a selection of these players will play as the Sydney Barbarians against the NSW Country U14 team.

In the Under 15 age group the Metropolitan players are split into four teams, Metropolitan Northern Zone (MNZ), Metropolitan Southern Zone (MSZ), Metropolitan Western Zone (MWZ) and the SJRU Barbarians (Baa Baa). Their NSW Country compatriots are split into two teams Country Black and Country Gold.. All these teams will play in a round robin in front of the selectors for spots in the Sydney and NSW Country U15 teams.

In the U16 age group the Metropolitan players are split into tow sides Sydney Red and Sydney Blue and they will compete against the NSW Country U16s (chosen at the Country Champs) and a NSWJRU Presidents XV in a round robin in front of selectors for spots in the Sydney and NSW Country U16 teams. The NSWJRU Presidents XV makes up the fourth side in this tournament and is made up of players from both Sydney districts and Country that either did not get initially selected or were injured at the time of the State Championships. They are very similar to the Barbarians team in the Under 15s.

Once this tournament is over and the teams are all selected - the next target is the NSW Positive Rugby Foundation City vs Country Carnival on the 4th August in Newcastle.

It is worth noting that making or missing these junior Rep teams does not mean the start or the end of your Rep rugby career... Nor does making the Barbarians mean that you cannot still make the Sydney sides etc....Take a look at the below 2015 SJRU Barbarians.. EIGHT of these Baa Baa's made it through to Sydney that year - But TWO of the players that didn't make further selection are currently in the Australian 7s team and the Waratahs respectively (and another in in the Waratahs GEN BLUE program too). Plus another player whom went no further that year made it to the Australian Schools Barbarians when Under 18.. See if you can tell who?
