Published
Monday, July 8, 2019

The Rugby 1st 2019 Girls NSWJRU State Championships have been run and won... A fantastic event which started at  Boronia Park, Hunters Hill before moving to St Lukes North at Concord for the Monday Finals. The finals in each of the age groups were as follows

🏆U13 – Two Blues / Eastwood 26 bt Penrith 24

🏆U15 – Brisbane JRU 39 bt Central North 24

🏆U17 – West Harbour 10 bt Brisbane JRU 7

The girls games today were simply amazing – the intensity and skill level on show made it a fantastic day of spectator rugby. All three finals games were closely contested and could easily have gone either way. Congratulations to all the girls involved as I think it was some of the best rugby I saw all weekend.

We also had the added bonus of Rugby 1st providing a prize for the Rugby 1st “Spirit of Rugby” Award which was presented to Ambryn Haua Murphy from Southern Districts Juniors Ambryn wins flights, accommodation and tickets to the Wallabies game in Brisbane – thanks to Angus Stewart, Adrian Moose Skeggs & Alex Lyus for this initiative for our girls. Also to Mollie Gray whom came to present it as well as our other Wallaroos and Aussie 7s players whom were our presenters on finals day Emily Cherry, Mahalia Murphy and Eva Karpani.

This event could not take place without the help and assistance of many.

Firstly I’d like to thank my committee – particularly Gary Paton & Kerry Brady whom were the competition managers and did a whole bunch of work organizing teams, draws, results, venues, rule enquiries etc.

Secondly the host clubs – Hunters Hill Rugby Union Football Club (Luke McCormaack, Lauren Salmon & Bec Ho) and West Harbour Junior Rugby (Phil McCrae & Amanda Babet) – You all did a fantastic job and many thanks to all your wonderful volunteers - I hope the weekend was a success for you and the clubs all managed to raise some funds.

Thirdly a big thanks to our referees and referee coaches – a lot of responsibility falls onto these guys and we certainly could not do this without you guys – a big thanks to you all and once I get all your sizes from Alex Richards a ‘State Champs’ Hoodie will be coming your way.

Lastly to the parents, friends and family that came out to support the boys as they showcased their skills at a Rep level. I’m sure you are all proud and I’d like to thank you for the way you all conducted yourselves and supported in the right spirit. The weekend went by with no major incidents and the “respect Rugby” theme was front and centre at all the venues.

It would also be remiss of me not to thank the staff and players from NSWRU that came out to support the juniors on their biggest weekend of the year.

Plus to our major naming rights sponsor the Rugby 1st, thanks Angus, Moose and Alex. Plus to Genesis Proprietary Trading Pty Ltd, Estilo Sports Travel and Gilbert Rugby Australia/New Zealand – your support means that we can provide these opportunities for our junior players and we thank you sincerely.
